You knew all day today that when 7PM hit, nothing else would matter.
The playoffs are upon us, and it's a marathon to the Cup.
Each series a race to four.
Who needs school, work, or a life?
If you know what the NHL playoffs are about there is no comparison in the world.
It could have been beautiful, it could have been sweet.
Outside:
Inside:
We were young, we were beautiful, we were champions.
We never, ever, ever, ever call out goaltenders. It's basically against our religion to say anything bad about the boys who call the crease home.
They are our heroes.
But, hey, let's be honest:
Fleury was not the greatest tonight.
Some of those goals were just bad, not that the defense was where it was necessarily supposed to be.
He will rebound and play better in Game 2. We believe that.
Our offense found its shit late in the game. If Fleury shuts the door and we keep scoring on a roll, the haters will have their mouths shut after Game 5.
We didn't play well enough to win this game. But the pieces are there and the Senators are by no means the better team. There are no flashbacks to times when the Pens simply didn't have the talent, experience, or ability to win games--we didn't come out shellshocked, we didn't look lost. It was a matter of consistency, a game that needed tweaking.
And the big saves had to be there.
They will be. We can get to it.
The Senators organization is second only to the Capitals in sheer annoyingness and homoeroticism. Cory Clouston:
Malkin proved himself ready for the playoffs. He took his acid. Basically anybody who criticizes Malkin's game at this point in his career is a complete idiot.
saving the team
What we said.
Craig Adams got the goal he has been deserving since FDR was in office.
And Alex Goligoski got one for all of the haters. It was the one that brought us closer. The one that, in desperation, we needed to survive.
And we came oh-so-very close to bringing down the house, but it wasn't meant to be.
A rebound game is in the works.
Haters gon' hate, but we will never be those people.
Let's get angry. Rally song time? Some bile-induced shit. None of that fancy stuff. We have to bring it. This game was won for the Sens by people like Ruutu and Neil. Those men are stains.
Know who else is a stain?
Jason Spezza.
Something's gotta give.
Possible rally call before Friday.
Don't blink.
GO PENS.
LATE EDIT:
Okay we'll always have a soft spot for Jarkko but seriously back the fuck up.
LATE EDIT II:
We're modding the comments for the night. Possibly big blog changes to come, but the exciting and fun kind! This is a temporary setback before we can move into the future.
We love each and every one of you with all of our hearts and we will approve comments with the swiftness that you all deserve, because you are heroes.
And in case you forgot,
GO PENS.

I picked MAF for my Rinko team, so watching him suck tonight was doubly uncool. I stand ready to do my part to put the power of Blingee behind him.
hell
fucking
yes
y'all said it all.
WOOOOOOO
You took the words right out of my mouth. Not the best game, but we're better than them and we'll bring it. Friday night is going to be amazing.
Phoenix just beat Detroit. Their power play was money - converted 3 of 3 (or was it 3 of 4?) times. Kudos to them.
I'm not worried about the Pens. We've been in worse situations. We'll pull through. Let's go Pens!
im drunk, we all know why.
but im not worried, our team is littered with saviours. i'll be at game 4, sending my love and avoiding all that jizz from sens fans (seriously, i dont know if you know how bad it is here in the capital)
tonight was a night of upsets, and feelin' things out.. as many 1st first round games.
we'll be back, and you'll be sorry.
also, malking? yes.
Wow. What a night. wtf, Sharks, get it together. That team is such a collective headcase. It's not like I have any particular love for the Sharks, but I don't even find the choking all that amusing anymore. Just kinda ridiculous.
I know it's just one game, but given their serious mental issues, I feel like a first-game loss is more significant for the Sharks than for, say, the Pens.
In re: the Wings/Coyotes game, well, I expected it to be rough. I did not expect to get screwed on a double minor non-call at the end of the game. That should've been over a minute of 5-on-3, too. That is not insignificant, and I am not happy.
I can say so much about tonight's game, but I'm drained for some reason. I feel out of it even though I haven't done much today and I only had a beer.
I can say a little bit about my evening though. I only got to watch like half of the game...Well I watched part of it in a bar waiting to pick up pizzas and then listened to some of it on the radio on my way home. During the car ride, my mom and I kept on doing our best Mike Lange impressions. (side note- PH needs to have a contest of everyone doing their best Mike Lange impressions. It could be glorious!) When I got home, I was all excited about having pizza and watching the game, but my sister was being a brat and just had to watch the new episode of Law and Order SVU. Grrr. She was like "they're losing so it doesn't matter." I wanted to scream at her, but since I love my parents, I didn't.
Okay I will say this much about the actual game...Geno must be getting some borscht or something good. The man was a beast tonight.
I'll do whatever it takes to send good vibes to the team. If that means I wear all black or classic baby blue (like the old jerseys) for the rest of the week, so be it. I'll even eat a bunch of Pittsburgh-ish foods (pirogie throwdown at my house! woo-hoo!)and drink Iron city beer (only the desperate drink that shit, right?).
As for the series, I have faith. I'll say it right now... 5 games and it'll be over. I won't even be pissed if it has to be 6 games. I just don't want it to go to seven or else they'll be exhausted.
Loooking around the NHL, sucks about the Sharks. Hurray about Philly beating the Devils. I swear if they do it in 4 games, I'll be a monkey's aunt or go hit on some internet creeper...just kidding. And yes about Phoenix beating Detroit! (I'm sure Lilo's beloved is broken hearted and I'm sorry about that, but still I think it's awesome that Phoenix is being a dangerous team right now.)
Okay, that's enough from me. Good night everyone! Keep the faith!
Yes! Everything you said is pretty much how I'm feeling about the game.
Pens will get back in this. No doubt about that. I have hope!
Go Pens!
I'm just going to go ahead and say it: I think I'm the only person out there who HATES LETANG. [*dodges Allison*]
I call him out on a regular basis throughout the game. Sample narration: "Oh look, it's LeTang, thinking he's a winger instead of a d-man-- DON'T GIVE HIM THE PUCK! ANYBODY BUT LETANG!!!!"
So when he went up on that rush in the 3rd and was 178 miles out of position when Ruutu scored that effing fifth goal, I was NOT surprised.
That being said, I love the rest of the Pens with my heart and soul and hope that Danny B gave them a long stern talking-to last night.
LET'S GO PENS!
i never thought i'd say this, but hey! flyers won! devils lost!
(yes, my personal hate for the devils is slightly bigger than flyers. plus who doesn't love to see the flyers go nuts and dance around the ice while lil marty chokes?)
I really want our boys to beat Ottawa. And yes, I'm trying my best to be faithful to Fleury (Malkin jersey last night, fleury tomorrow.)
But if it comes down to the Eastern final and it's devils and caps... I'm gonna cry.
ps. rooting phoenix for western conference!! woohoooo!
I am going to hear Spezza's brain-damaged laugh in my nightmares. I may never sleep again. Thanks, bitches...thanks a lot. He sounds like the next thing to come out of his mouth should be "SQUEAL LIKE A PIG, BOY!"
Also, two words...Jarko F. Ruutu.
@Juls - I find it interesting that you don't like Letang. I respect it, but I'm scratching my head. For me, if there was ever a defenseman that I was pissed off at right now, it's Gogo. He hesitates way too much whenever he gets the puck it seems. I really feel like the power play has suffered because of him. I know he got a goal during last Sunday's game, but I'm still wondering how on earth that happened. I can only hope the boy is getting some damn confidence or something lol.
As for Letang, I know he pretends to be a winger sometimes, but I think having an aggressive D like him is a good thing. I mean I don't see Gogo smashing anyone like Brooks and I don't see him being up in everyone's grill like Letang is. I think the strategy of passing Letang the puck is good because most teams don't expect defense to get goals. It's kinda like in soccer how you use your full backs. The downside is though, you need your two guys to be the barrier between the other team and your goalie. That's at least how I see it. Luckily for us though, usually Letang gets down the rink pretty damn fast. He is the team's best skater or at least one of the best skaters.
I didn't get to watch the 3rd period last night, so unfortunately I can't comment about the goal Ruutu got. Just from the surface of things, it sounds like there was a major lack of communication.
One last thing...I was wondering, what's your opinion on forwards who play like defensemen? It sounds like you don't like defense trying to be wingers, which is cool. I just figured that I'd play devil's advocate here :)
@Megs:
I've had this random hatred for Letang that started last year, probably right after Bylsma started. It was an ongoing joke for a while between me and my mom-- I said "ANYBODY BUT LETANG!" and then he scored. So I kept saying it in an effort to get him to score again... but nada.
I just think he plays too risky sometimes. Yep, he's fast enough to get back once he's gone over into the offensive zone... but I think if we compiled a bunch of clips together of him getting stuck behind the other team's net and then the other team scoring as a result of an odd-man rush, people would actually see he's not worth the $$ we'll be paying him. Yeah, he had the most shots of any D-men on our team this season, but it's not as though it really paid off being up in the other end of the ice. [679th in shooting percentage with 3 goals on the season.]

I agree-- Gogo hesitates too much, but Tanger doesn't hesitate ENOUGH. I know he has a lot of energy and is eager to contribute, but I think he makes more mistakes than people realize. Just my two cents. : )
P.S. I heart Jordan Leopold. I want everyone to play like him and Gonch.
perfect recap. what was needed to be said, was said perfectly.
GO PENS. rebound time bitches.
